Six months later, you discover the AI-generated authentication code had a logic flaw that let anyone bypass passwords. The AI wrote confident-looking code that was subtly wrong.
This happens. AI coding tools are useful — but they're not a junior developer with oversight. They're a power tool that requires experienced hands.
What this solves (in real business terms)
- Boilerplate code: Database connections, API clients, standard CRUD operations — AI generates these quickly and correctly 80% of the time

Minimum viable implementation
- Establish review requirements. AI-generated code requires human review before merge — no exceptions. This is non-negotiable.
- Pick a tool with privacy controls. GitHub Copilot Business ($19/user/month) doesn't train on your code. Claude and Cursor have similar options. Check before signing.
- Add security scanning to your pipeline. Use automated tools (Snyk, SonarQube, GitHub's security scanning) to catch what human review misses.
- Document where AI was used. Keep a log: "This feature used Copilot for boilerplate, human wrote business logic."
- Limit AI to appropriate tasks. Boilerplate, tests, documentation — yes. Authentication, payment processing, security-critical code — no.
When to hire help
- You're building something security-critical (handling payments, medical data, financial information) — hire a security-focused developer to review AI-generated code before it ships.
- You have legacy code with known issues — a developer can use AI to analyze the code and identify problems, but should not use AI to generate fixes without oversight.
- You're scaling a development team — an experienced technical lead can establish AI usage guidelines and review processes.
AI coding tools are worth using — carefully. The developers who get the most value from them are the ones who treat AI output like a first draft: useful to start from, never ready to ship as-is.
